Hearth & Harbor Request an Evening

Porto – Personalised Tourism · A Private Evening, Arranged Around You

The dinner we'd cook for family — now you're the guest.

Hearth & Harbor plans one private dinner around exactly what you want — the menu, the pace, whether you cook alongside us or simply arrive to eat.

Personalised, Not Templated

Every part of the evening is a choice you make.

Talk to us, and these five things get built around you — nothing here comes pre-set.

The Menu

Start from our examples, or tell us what you're curious about — we'll see what's possible, within what the market and the season allow.

The Format

Join us at the market, then cook alongside us at the stove — or simply arrive when dinner's already on the table. Your call.

The Pace

Three courses or five, a quick evening or one that runs long into the night.

The Occasion

A birthday, an anniversary, or simply a few days in Porto — tell us, and the table follows.

The Sourcing

Curious about a region or an ingredient in particular? Ask when we talk, and we'll see what we can bring to the table.

Not a Restaurant. Not a Tour.

An invitation, not a booking.

“Porto already has plenty built for tourists — set menus, fixed seatings, tables turned twice a night.”

Hearth & Harbor isn't one of them. Each evening is planned around a single guest or a small group — what you like to eat, what you're curious to try, how many are at the table, and whether the trip marks something worth celebrating.

Not a rented dining room dressed up to look lived-in — it's the home our family lives in, a real house about 25 minutes outside the city where we've marked our own Christmas Eve, birthdays and wedding celebrations. Dinner moves outside to the terrace or in by the fireplace, depending on the weather. It doesn't get more personal, or more warm, than that.

You're welcomed to a home of memories — not seated in a room built for strangers.

Two Ways to Spend the Evening

Hands in it, or hands free.

Some guests want to shop the market and stand at the stove with us; others would rather let us handle everything before they arrive — we settle that when we talk. Either way, you're treated like family, or a close friend.

Market & Stove

Cook alongside us

Join the morning trip to the market, then into the kitchen — hands in the dough, fish on the grill, a glass of wine within reach the whole time.

Just the Table

Arrive to dinner already underway

Come straight from pickup to a home that already smells like dinner. Sit, pour your own wine, and let the evening come to you.

Plenty of guests land somewhere in between — cooking one course, say, and simply enjoying the rest. Tell us what sounds like your evening; we'll build the rest around it.

The Table — Five Examples

Five examples. Not a menu.

These are five moments from our own family's calendar — enough to show you the kind of story a dish can carry here, not a list to pick from. The real menu is written together, after we talk.

Bacalhau à Consoada

Three ways — as we cook it on Christmas Eve

Salt cod poached with cabbage and potato, baked under a cornbread crust, and slowly confit — the three preparations kept for the one dinner every Porto family sits down to together each December 24th.

Sardinhada

As we grill it for our own birthdays

Sardines charcoal-grilled over an open flame, roasted peppers, boiled potatoes and crusty broa bread — the meal that shows up at every summer birthday party in Porto, relaxed and sociable, best enjoyed with your hands.

Churrascada

The way we fire up the grill each summer

Pork and beef, cut simply and grilled slowly over charcoal, the way we do for family on long summer afternoons — from a butcher we've bought from for generations, who raises the animals himself rather than buying them in.

The Wedding Wines

Chosen the way we chose ours

A short, personal flight of Portuguese wines — reds, whites, whatever suits the evening — picked one bottle at a time, the way a family chooses the pours for its own wedding toast rather than a printed wine list.

Leite Creme, Torched at the Table

Just for the occasion

The custard every Portuguese grandmother keeps a recipe for, its sugar top caramelized right in front of you and poured alongside a glass of Port — saved, traditionally, for the days worth celebrating rather than an ordinary weeknight.

None of this is fixed — these five are simply where the conversation about your table usually starts. Allergic, vegetarian, or curious about something else entirely? Say so when we talk, and the table changes with you.

How the Evening Unfolds

Five steps, one evening.

01

We talk first

A short call or message before you arrive in Porto — what you love, what you'd rather skip, any allergies, whether there's an occasion behind the visit, and whether you'd rather cook alongside us or be fully hosted.

02

We shop that morning

Fresh fish and produce from a local farmers and fishermen's market — quieter and more personal than the touristy ones — plus cheese and wine from producers we already buy from by name. Come along if that's the evening you chose; otherwise, it's done before we collect you.

03

We collect you

Pickup from your hotel at the agreed time — about a 25-minute drive out of the city, so bring nothing but appetite. No taxis, no directions to figure out.

04

Dinner, our way or yours

Three to five courses — cooked side by side if you picked the hands-on evening, or paced out and served to you if you didn't. Either way, a dinner party among friends, never a timed restaurant service.

05

We take you home

Drop-off back at your hotel when the evening winds down, whenever you want to.

Where It Comes From

Named sources, not a supplier list.

Fish & Produce

Bought each morning from the same small market stalls, not the tourist-trail ones.

Cheese & Enchidos

A queijaria we've trusted for years for cheese and traditional Portuguese enchidos.

Wine

Secluded quintas along the most prestigious wine regions in Portugal, including the Douro, chosen bottle by bottle, not by label.

Bread

A neighbourhood padaria, baked fresh that morning — not from a supermarket shelf.

Curious about flavours from elsewhere in Portugal? Mention it when we talk — we're happy to look into sourcing something specially, though we can't promise every request.

Reserve an Evening

Tell us about your evening.

We take on a limited number of evenings each week, so a table is never turned to fit two seatings a night. Send your details and we'll reply personally to plan the rest.
